As the year 2015 comes to a close, at Back to Eden Group we want to wish you a Merry Christmas, sensitively.
This year was one that needed to be skillfully navigated. It was necessary to carefully avoid words or actions that could label you homophobic, Islamophobic, misogynist, transphobic, racist or just plain micro-aggressive or culturally inappropriate. Of course, we would have been remiss to forget that black, French, Syrian, Ukranian and Kenyan lives mattered. However, perish the thought that all lives mattered since that could be perceived as racist or culturally inappropriate. It could have been quite dangerous this past year to question why the earth has not appeared to be warming for the past decade or two or wonder out loud if owning property, running a business or making a profit was unforgivable. What on this earth was a carbon-aware, white, male, Jesus-following, recovering capitalist to do?
During this festive season, it just seems appropriate to forget about who we may offend, be ourselves and ask that those who read this be sensitive to our ethnicity, sexuality, spirituality and nationality. After all, this type of thing goes both ways doesn’t it? So, as sensitively and culturally aware as we can ….
Especially to those out there who may be Muslim, Syrian, dark-skinned, same-sex, refugee couples. We really don’t care how others label you or for that matter how others label us. Labels are just someone else’s way of trying to categorize you or put you in context with everything else in their world. How important are they anyway? Perhaps that’s why the one who’s birth we are celebrating most frequently referred to himself as the “Son of Man”. The most generic label possible for a male.
We mean it. We really do.
